notes on freedom
A weekly email series containing easily digestible morsels of info on relational trauma and how to find freedom from it.
THIS WEEK IT’S A NOTE ON…modern life
Modern life pushes us to go faster. From the moment we start school we’re measured by our progress. We are pushed to achieve more, reach further and be better. The focus is on the outcome not the present moment.
The modern workplace is no different. We hustle. We race to get the job done and feel shame if we don’t measure up. We go for the promotion (which involves doing more work, even quicker).
Is it too predictable if I mention social media, phones or the 24-hour news cycle? These aspects of modern life alert us to ‘urgent’ information every few moments.
In modern life, go-faster is the unspoken principle we all live by.
This is unhealthy for those without trauma. For those of us with trauma, it is deeply harmful.
Freedom can be found as we give ourselves permission to slow down and to stop hustling. As we give ourselves permission to get off the treadmill, switch off the news, put down our phones, move slowly (even if we’re late) and do less.
