notes on freedom
A weekly email series containing easily digestible morsels of info on relational trauma and how to find freedom from it.
THIS WEEK IT’S A NOTE ON…spirituality
“There is a pathway to permanent freedom through the adoption of spiritual practices and principles.”
This is a core principle from the Conscious Recovery approach to healing trauma and addiction. I’m interested in how it lands within you? How do you react internally to the idea that you can find permanent freedom from addiction and trauma if you adopt spiritual practices and principles?
The idea that we can find permanent freedom through spiritual practices and principles is radical, so it was the subject of a very honest discussion between trauma therapists and coaches at the Conscious Recovery workshop.
I want to share the bones of what was said…
They said they know, deep down, that this principle is true: to heal we must each find our way to spiritual practices and principles that feel comfortable and congruent with who we are. They said that healing and freedom require a spiritual solution.
Interestingly though, they shared that they feel they have to hide this principle (a principle that they hold dear and know to be true) from their clients. Why? Because they sense that people don’t want to hear it, because their clients want scientific solutions not spiritual ones. Because people want control and spirituality is not something we can ‘control’.
Freedom from trauma is found as we open up to the idea that our healing journey is also a spiritual one.
