Trauma leads to disconnection. We disconnect from our body, from the present moment, from relationships, from the world, from parts of our self and identity, and from the central, or ‘higher’, part of our conscious awareness.
The part of consciousness I’m referring to is the stable, unchanging part of our being that exists behind the ‘noise’ of our thoughts, our reactions and our pain.
It’s the ‘higher’ part of self that can observe what we’re thinking and doing. The intuitive part of ourselves that helps us understand our own limits, values, needs, goals, purpose and boundaries. The part that provides us with a sense of centre and peace.
This part of self exists when we’re in the present moment and in connection with our body. It’s always available to us, but trauma, chronic stress and dysregulation disconnect us from it.
We’ve all experienced connection to this part of self, but the connection tends to be fleeting. To develop a more reliable connection with our ‘higher’ self we must first learn to reconnect to our body. This takes time and patience, but the rewards are great.
As we develop a stronger mind-body connection we find we can more easily pause, slow down and be. It’s here (in the slowing down) that we can connect to the ‘higher’ self. Freedom from ego, from old patterns, from confusion and from so much more, is found as we reconnect to this stable, reliable, ‘higher’ part of consciousness.
